Game 20

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Last night David Villa scored his fourth goal of the tournament in the 63rd minute against Portugal, taking Spain through to the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win. Portugal’s star player Christiano Ronaldo was unable to make an impact in the game, and was shown deliberately spitting in front of the camera man after the final whistle.

In other action, Paraguay beat Japan 5-3 on panalties after both teams had failed to find the back of the net during regulation and extra time. Paraguay will progress to the quarter finals where they will meet Spain in the next round.

Fact of the day:

The first ever player to be sent off in a World Cup match was Peru’s Mario de Las Casas against Romania in 1930.

Test your skills today with questions about red cards at the World Cup, and a quote from the former England manager Graham Taylor.

Monday’s football action resulted in wins for both Holland and Brazil. A last minute penatly gave Slovakia a consolation goal, however Holland still progressed comfortably into the next round with a 2-1 win.

Brazil continued their winning ways against Chile, with the ball finding the back of the net on 3 occassions. Chile were unable to make an impact, and the game finished 3-0. Brazil played with style and skill, further fuelling rumours that they may be the team to beat!!

Game 18

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Sunday’s football action brought victory for Argentina and Germany, who will both progress to the quarter finals. Argentina put in a convincing performance to beat Mexico 3-1, with man of the match Carlos Tevez, putting two past the keeper into the back of the net.

England suffered a 4-1 defeat to old rivals Germany. At 2-1 down, England’s Frank Lampard celebrated a crossbar deflection which clearly crossed the line, however to the country’s suprise, the referee did not see the goal. Unfortunately for England, they were easily outplayed by the young German side. Check out the picture below to see the controversial ‘goal’.

Fact of the day:

The most goals scored by an English man during the World Cup Finals is 10 by Gary Lineker (1986 and 1990)
