Today England play their biggest game of the tournament against the old rivals Germany. There has been some classic encounters over the years not least England’s 5-1 win in Munich in 2001. So lets keep fingers crossed that come 5pm today England will be through to the quarter finals!

Fact of the day:

In the early days of the game, the referees used to wave a handkerchief to control the players. The whistles were introduced in the game in the year 1878.

Danny Jordaan, CEO of the 2010 World Cup Organising Committee has praised the home nation football team, and the incredible suport of the fans. Despite beating France, South Africa failed to progress from their group into the final stages. After the match Jordaan said “Bafana Bafana are out of the World Cup but they won the hearts and minds of all South Africans and the whole world tonight”. “I remain confident that South Africans will continue to be fantastic hosts for the next two and a half weeks and make the most of this incredible time in our country’s history, which has already seen us achieve so much.”

 

Fact of the day:

The longest unbeaten goalkeeper in the World Cup Finals is Italy’s Walter Zenga with 517 minutes without conceding a goal.
