SkillsActive’s drive for improving standards of literacy language and numeracy amongst the workforce and the World Cup Skills partnership project are not the only strides being taken by organisations.

Premier League Reading Stars

The Premier League, NLT, Football Foundation, Arts Council England run the Premier League Reading Stars Challenge for parents and children.

Using the motivational power of football to encourage families to enjoy reading, each of the 20 Premier League clubs nominate a Reading Star to recommend his favourite book which are then made available in the public libraries who host Reading Clubs. Since 2003, 111 Premier League players Reading Stars.  Over 1,5million participants to date and over 25,000 books read.

Reading the Game

The National Literacy Trust, through their Reading The Game project, works to promote reading, writing, and speaking and listening to all ages through the motivational power of sport through a range of resources, projects and partnerships.

The National Literacy Trust are also running a pilot project called “Words for Work” to raise awareness of speaking and listening as a key literacy skill addressing the need for effective speaking and listening skills for employability.

Heading for Success

Heading for Success, a joint initiative between FA, FA Learning, Football, Premier League and Football League to using the power of football to attract adults into Skills for Life learning at football club hosted learning centres.
